Mr Ashworth trained at Manchester University Medical School and then in trauma and orthopaedic surgery on the Oxford Registrar Training Rotation. He was a Fellow in joint revision and sports medicine surgery in Adelaide, Australia (1998). He was appointed as a consultant at Torbay Hospital in 1999.

Mr Ashworth's specialist interest is in young adult hip disease including Femoro-Acetabular Impingement surgery.

Mr Ashworth was one of the first surgeons in the UK to offer both open and arthroscopic surgery for hip impingement pain. He has over 30 years of experience of arthroscopic hip surgery and 25 years of experience of hip impingement surgery.

Over the last 20 years Mr Ashworth has helped develop the role of the Surgical Care Practitioner (SCP). This helped to reduce the impact on Torbay Hospital of the reduction in junior Doctors hours (as a result of the EWT directive).  Development of the SCP role to support junior doctor working has resulted in Torbay having 5 SCPs working across the wards, theatre, out-patients and the AE department. Many SCP can now prescribe medicines (following additional training) and are training to provide on-call support to the junior doctor team. Mr Ashworth was a co-author of the Royal College of Surgeons document on the SCP Curriculum Framework

Mr Ashworth's private practice is based at Mount Stuart Hospital, Torquay. He manages NHS trauma cases at Torbay Hospital, Torquay.
